Lag free shopping! Fact or fiction??
With the ETD sale in full swing and the Last Call sale coming soon, I thought it time to make a post on sale shopping fashion and etiquette. For the love of all that is sacred and fashion holy, please read on and maybe we can all make a difference in these lovely sales and laggy fashion events we love to hate.
Yes. I’m bald and I’m showing the world. I went just like this to the ETD sale and did fairly well with the lag. Want to know how?
Here’s my philosophy. Everyone is having a hard time rezzing and can barely move. They are focused on shopping. Do you think they care what you look like? If you are reading this and know someone who needs to give this post a whirl, please forward it on and help the rest of us.
Here’s my list of tips and tricks that seemed to have helped me survive the lag at the ETD sale this weekend:
- Remove your prims: Yes, girls. You too can live without your lashes, face lights, prim skirts, 200-prim boots, and yes…*GASP* your hair! Try a system skirt, as I did in my picture. There’s lots of cute stuff out there that has NO PRIMS! Besides, others will think its just the lag and your hair is slow to rez.
- Prims, Part 2: Take them off before you go! The server will be slow to respond, so they won’t come off right away, if at all. A little preparation will take you a long way.
- Remove scripted objects: AO’s, multi gadgets, mysti tools, anti-away and anti-spy devices, AV radar, and translators. FYI, I find flying less traumatic than standing when I’ve got no AO!!
- Turn down your graphics settings: turn off local lighting and water rippling, set your terrain detail to low, and crank down those sliders as low as you can stand it.
- Cam in from a neighboring sim: If you are lucky, stand on the property line and cam in. Also helpful if the sim is full.
- If the sim lets you build, rez a box: Sit on the box and move yourself around. I learned this at the Hair Fair and it works brilliantly.
- TAKE YOUR DEMOS HOME: Ladies, with the lag, your demos are not gonna rez in a timely fashion and will put stress on the sim. Take them home where you can actually see and make a sound choices, and then go back and scoop them up at a later time.
Any tricks or tips you’d like to share? Favorite shopping outfits? Please let me the rest of us know how you survive the lag-fest!

Thanks a lot for the advice! I think you have it about covered, although, since I work at ETD I feel I need to wear my hair at least
But if I can stand there like a noob with no AO or facelight — you can too! Actually people are being pretty good sports about it. Here’s my post on the topic: http://hellodownthere.blogspot.com/
I do wear a system pedicure though LOL — I draw the line at naked toenails LOL
I hit the ETD sale on the first day.. I took off EVERYTHING, NO HUDS, NO attachments.. I even went to a noob skin and a pair of linden jeans and shirt.. I rezzed fine… but I was surrounded by grey people! At least I got the hair I wanted! See ya at the Last Call sale.. I’ll be Ruth!
Just going to add that instead of rezzing a box… you can pose stand hop (If they have them)
I did that just yesterday… at ETD
A yes .. the seat/pose stay ploy — I meet a lot of people at the CSR desk at ETD that way
Now do you think we would talk them into putting some pose stands down at the Last Call sale?
I find that orbiting everyone in the sim works pretty damn good as well!
On a serious note, ETD and Last Call are mature sims so we should all go in stark bollock naked, and bald. I mean, what’s the point of paying up to 4k for a skin and only showing off the nips and bits at your weekly bdsm group meeting. Also, with this approach, who’s going to be looking at your monkey stance and shining bonce when they can be freely peeping through your beef curtains?
OMG you are so right! I was at ETD sale and we all know how lag it is right now! But everyone was wearing skirts, and shoes, and face lights, plus jewerly… and trying all the demos! Why can’t they be polite? I was like the only one barefoot and bald and with no other type of prims attatched!
People should really try to do what you have in your list! It was all much easier, and I could go back and buy the rest of the hair I couldn’t because of the lag!
*muah*
great comments!!! i like the orbit one! hehe (just kidding0
i was wondering, what if the sim owner set the limit to a nice one, where there would not be as much lag, (including all the tips above) would that bother you shoppers?
would you rather wait, and get in and out, (if a sim limit was turned down?) or just stay in a laggy area hoping for the best?
i know having ppl on a sim forever helps traffic numbers and it’s not really a good indicator if everyone was there for hours because they couldn’t move. so i’m just curious for shoppers, what would be ideal for you?
i’d personally like, bald, attachmentless with a low sim limit so i could get in and out quickly!
xoxo,
caLLie
I think I just screamed AMEN in RL O.o!!!!
Haha, let’s orbit all freaking blingtards (and even fellow fashionistas, ah yes, they STILL DO IT, sadly) that 1- don’t care or 2- think it’s a shame to run naked (I always do it, and you should see the comments that I get, that are not even a joke, and even from “known” people, XD!!??)… I only have one thing to say: IT’S PIXELS. Wake up! Nothing shocking!!!! You are not naked for real! Hahahhaa. And no, noone will think “omg how horrid does this person look today?” if you don’t have hair or facelight.
Oh and caLLie, personally, I would prefer a reduced limit, period.
Noone did it before, I think it would make a TON of people really annoyed and mad, but STILL is the better way to do it. Let them wait.
Ugh thank you! As I waded around the sale at ETD last night, there were so many people that were decked out in full bling and had all sorts of extra objects attached to themselves (strollers, cigarettes, poofers, wings, etc), nevermind the more basic stuff (shoes, jewelry, etc) that barely anyone seemed to be removing. :/
Though I did forget about my face light. :p Something I won’t forget at Last Call’s sale!
LOVE the pic Madi! Lag wasn’t so bad for me yesterday at ETD, but I did have to wait on the border for a while trying to get in.
I love the comments, although I can’t help but ponder things like why people who close comments on their own blog feel they have the right to ramble on vapidly in the comment area of other’s. Hmmm Puzzling.
CC, I hear ya. Blog comments are so important, allowing readers to share their opinions, ideas and feedback. I like to hear what people think and what they have to add. After all, none of us are perfect!
Reading everyone’s comments makes the fact that I’m preaching to the choir acutely obvious. How do we reach the tired, the blinging, the lagging masses?
and *knocks on her monitor* I hope that the folks over at Last Call hear about the pose stand hopping suggestion. How wonderful would that be?
~Madi
So you think that closing comments on a blog is merely a way to prevent others from shattering the farce of one’s paper doll fantasy of perfection?
Good tips! Sadly, I don’t think many people will give a crap. My friend did try telling people to go prim/ao free last night and the poor thing got blasted and told to basically take a hike! One person even said they would put on more stuff just because she asked people to take stuff off?! Like yeah…that’ll teach us to try to make the experience better for everyone. *slow clap*
Hmmm….Kitty, after reading Betty’s comment, I have a question. When you orbit someone, can they tell who did it?
*rubs hands together devilishly*

Here’s another tip – a huge help in crowded areas: 1) if you don’t have the Client and Server menus, get them (control-alt-D on Windows, control-command-D (I think) on Mac). 2) On the Client menu, go to Rendering->Types and turn off Character (now avatars are invisible) and Particles (now bling is invisible). 3) open Minimap and zoom it in all the way; since you cannot see people, you will have to watch the minimap to keep from bumping into them. At full zoom, this is easy. 4) when you’re done shopping, remember to turn Character and Particles back on.

Hi! These tips are great!! Inspired by your post, I made the one at
http://getasecondlife.net/2008/01/interface-edit-truques-e-dicas-second-life/despir-se-para-comprar-mais-roupa/ so these tips could be shared with Portuguese and Brazilian SL users. Thank you so much =)
Great tips and so pleased with myself that I figured it out on my own! For the first time ever, I even removed my MT…rather shocking for me, but you know…anything for hair.
I was also surprised at the amount of people still fully decked out in prim attachments and the nastiness that spewed forth followed with “ooh it’s sssoooo laggy!” comments from the same people.
Another great tip is to shop with friends or make a new one (which myself and another did) and push each other along.
Personally, I think if I had paid attention to the sale dates, I would have waited. I also lack patience, so that might not be true.
However! I think how ETD ran the sale is perfect.
Come one..what fun to be had making new friends, urging on old friends to keep ramming that invisa wall and wade through mud! Hours of entertainment!
Great tips!
Don’t worry about changing skins or system clothes, though. That’s all just textures, and SL is going to grab those textures whether you dressed like Ruth or wore your usual finery. It’s the scripts, prims and attachments that really make a difference.
I’m not sure about bald, though. I’ve got some decently textured system hair somewhere, thanks to Robin Sojourner.
I did it, Madi! My ETD sales experiences was much smoother
